XTRF and MemSource Announce Integration

XTRF Management Systems and MemSource Technologies have announced integration of their flagship translation products today. The integration provides for an easy import of MemSource analysis files in a .csv/.log format and the automatic preparation of quotes based on this data in XTRF.

The following is a recap of our webinar Translation Trends for 2015 featuring David Canek, Chris Wendt, Jan Hofmeister and Torben Dahl Jensen.


Main trends:

In the beginning of the webinar, CEO of Memsource David Canek stated that from his perspective, the primary trend in the translation industry is the advent of the cloud technology.

Throughout 2014, Memsource’s user base more than doubled, reaching 30,000 users. Over 1,500 translation providers now sign up for the service every month, and approximately 100 million words are translated. According to a survey carried out in September 2014, more than 93% of Memsource users are satisfied with the service. These figures are indicative of a strong growth in the use of cloud tools.

The second trend emphasized by David was the rise of Machine Translation (MT). Since introducing analytics in Memsource, it is now possible to calculate exactly how widespread the use of MT has become. Over the past year, 47% of all translations in Memsource have been carried out with the support of MT. This is an impressive figure, since Memsource users are mostly professional translators and translation agencies and use MT with post-editing to improve overall productivity. In comparison, 72% of projects leveraged translation memory technology, while only 42% projects utilized term bases.

The third trend mentioned was the move from isolated “silos” in the supply chain to closer collaboration and sharing of language assets between buyers, LSPs and translators. In 2014, Memsource launched Shared Projects, Shared Jobs, Instant Quote and other collaboration features to facilitate this transition.

David Canek announced that in 2015 under the LSP Partner program, Memsource will focus on empowering translation companies to become solution providers. This business model implies that LSPs manage the linguistic assets of their clients, and provide a technology platform in addition to translation services.

Chris Wendt, Group Program Manager at Microsoft, introduced machine translation Post-Publish Post-Editing, or P3. The concept is to publish raw machine translation first, and then do post-editing on a live web page.

Post-Publish Post-Editing allows inexpensive translations to be produced instantly, and human translators can improve the quality later on in a “lazy fashion”. P3 can even leverage community translation and engage domain experts, enthusiasts, or the buyer’s company employees since time constraints are more relaxed in P3 than in professional human translation.

Chris explained that while MT post-editing is used to achieve human translation quality with less effort, in reality the productivity gains are usually not very impressive. This is due to quality control and management creating too large of an overhead.

In contrast, with P3 productivity gains are much greater, because only relevant pieces of content are localized. The rest is left to raw machine translation, which in many cases is good enough for practical purposes. Chris suggested that in 2015, Post-Publish Post-Editing will occupy the middle ground between raw MT and human-quality post-editing.

Jan Hofmeister, Senior Project Manager at Moravia, focused on his company’s transition to the cloud translation environment as well as a massive systems integration project to automate content flow.

There were a number of requirements that led to selecting Memsource as the cloud environment of choice. These included:

1)      The ability to exchange files between PMs and vendors without resorting to email.

2)      Agile content flow: Moravia’s clients often change source texts on the fly, and these changes can be shared with translators in real time.

3)      Previewing of completed translations for specific file types.

4)      API to integrate the platform with Moravia’s internal tools for QA, internal MT engines, accounting.

Once the integration was complete, Moravia had fully automated several steps in project management, including content pre-processing, uploading, task assignment, and more. The resulting solution is now equipped with analytics that calculate costs and deadlines for clients. This is a very welcome and appreciated feature. Jan concluded his presentation by stating that Moravia will continue with the integration of their own workflow and content systems with those of their customers and with Memsource.

Moravia localizes most of the content into 20 languages, and in some cases into 100 languages, with the average throughput measured in millions of words per month. Its technology approach sets an example for other providers. It is likely that more translation companies will follow in these steps and focus on automation and connecting their systems with those of the clients.

Torben Dahl Jensen, Partner and Language Technology Manager at TextMinded explained what it means to be a translation solution provider.

The model treats all people working on a translation project as a community – possibly including the buyer’s in-house specialists, LSP staff, freelance translators and subject matter experts – and aims to give this community a single platform to collaborate and share linguistic assets.

Torben provided an example: one of their important clients had an internal translation department, and they sourced additional volumes that they couldn’t process internally to TextMinded. Initially the translation company built their own terminology and term base for this project. The client then asked whether it was possible to share translation memory and terms. In response, TextMinded built a solution with simultaneous data access using Memsource.

At the end of his presentation, Torben emphasized the importance of sharing language assets and connecting different groups of specialists involved in producing translations for the same client organization. The move in this direction – sustainable communication – is going to be one of the major trends in 2015.

Semantix Becomes Memsource Solution Partner

The largest language service provider in the Nordic region, Semantix, has signed a strategic partnership agreement with Memsource and has become a Memsource Solution Partner. Semantix is currently integrating Memsource with their in-house system to increase operational efficiency. Memsource technology will also be used by Semantix in a bundle with their own language services and offered to their enterprise clients.

ApSIC Xbench Connector to Memsource – A More Efficient Way to Run QA

ApSIC has released Xbench Connector for Memsource. It eliminates the need to manually export files from Memsource into Xbench to run QA passes with this software. Project managers who rely on Xbench for QA can save a lot of time and effort.


With the connector you can browse your Memsource projects on Xbench and can run a QA pass for all relevant files directly. If there is a problem in the text that requires editing, you can click on “Edit Source” to open the Memsource Editor right at the segment that is currently selected in ApSIC Xbench. All modifications will be automatically saved in the online document.

 

You select a project in Xbench and go to Memsource PM dashboard to manage it by right-clicking on the project name and selecting “manage in Memsource.com”.

If your Memsource project has several workflow steps, you can also choose the workflow step for the QA pass, and compare two workflow steps in the project tree. It is useful to assess the work of the reviewer or to make a report on how much effort it took to edit the text.

Memsource and Gengo Partnership Update

Our most recent releases in January 2016, in particular Memsource Cloud 5.3, have introduced several optimizations that make the integration of Gengo’s human translation engine with Memsource even more efficient. Memsource users can pre-translate their files using Gengo directly from within Memsource Cloud starting at just $0.05 per word.

Gengo is a human-powered translation platform with a community of over 18,000 native speakers working across 140+ countries. Gengo currently provides support for over 30 languages with very high throughput and maintains an average delivery time of three hours or less for 95% of its projects. Gengo charges no minimum fees and works efficiently with jobs of any size.

Memsource enterprise users can benefit from Gengo’s translation service for languages not covered by their vendors or when high-quality professional translation is not required or not possible due to budget constraints and when machine translation is not enough.

Memsource translation agency users can benefit from Gengo to automate the translation of small translation jobs, for fast turnaround jobs, for language pairs not covered by their linguists. Gengo can also be used as a buffer when demand cannot be met by the translation agency’s linguists. Memsource users can launch Gengo’s translation service directly from the Memsource Cloud user interface.

Gengo’s crowd platform is optimized to give customers a fast translation. With thousands of translators in all time zones, new jobs can be picked up and translated in just minutes, no matter what time of day or day of the week.

The Gengo platform is designed for dynamic, everyday content, whether for personal or business use. While Gengo does not support legal, medical, technical or other specialist texts, such content can still be translated with a full professional workflow, including specialist linguists, editors and proofreaders. With the content profiling functionality within Memsource, you can designate the types of content suitable for Gengo.

With Gengo, you can now offer language pairs not covered by your own network of providers. Take, for example, Japanese, Malay and Indonesian. In a similar fashion,  if you face more work than your own linguists can handle, you can scale up your production for existing languages.

Pre-translate

Furthermore, you can effectively cut translation costs and improve delivery time for more expensive language combinations, such as Japanese to English. Pre-translate files and have a professional editor review them, similar to reviewing machine translations. Memsource Cloud 5.3: Multilingual Excel, Analytics, InDesign Preview

Memsource Cloud 5.3 is scheduled for release on Sunday, 17 January 2016, at 11:00 AM GMT. This release introduces a new analytics capability, Adobe InDesign previews, multilingual Excel file support and other improvements.

Multilingual Excel Files

      • Multilingual Excel files include a source language and multiple target languages. They are now supported out-of-the-box in Memsource:
        • Previously, processing multilingual Excel files involved a lot of manual pre- and post-processing in Memsource. When you needed to import a multilingual Excel file into Memsource with, for example, English as the source language and German, Spanish and Japanese as the target languages, you were able to make use of our bilingual Excel filter but needed to manually create separate jobs for each language pair (in this case English-German, English-Spanish and English-Japanese).
        • From now on, you can work with just a single file, using our new multilingual Excel filter.
        • All you need to do is map the corresponding target language columns in the file import settings.
        • This will lead to the automatic creation of separate jobs for each language pair, while in the background the file will remain as one. When you download the completed file after translation, you will have a single Excel file containing all languages.

InDesign Preview

        • Adobe InDesign files can now be previewed from within Memsource Web Editor.
          • We are bringing this new feature thanks to our integration with Frontlab, a leader in InDesign preview and proofing tools.
          • To use this new functionality, first sign up with Frontlab and then enter your Frontlab credentials into Memsource under Setup – Integrations – Frontlab.
          • When you are done, a new menu item, “PDF Preview”, will appear in the Web Editor under the Document menu.
          • After clicking on PDF Preview, the InDesign preview will be downloaded to your PC as a PDF file.

Business Analytics

      • Translations processed through Memsource have exceeded 1 billion words in the last quarter of 2015. We are now launching business analytics so that our users can track translation volumes, costs, productivity and other metrics.
        • We have deployed a dedicated data warehouse to serve all of our analytics needs. With the warehouse in place, we can now start launching new analytics features.
        • Initially, the new analytics features are only available for Memsource customers with one of our enterprise editions.
        • To start with, we are now releasing a set of pre-configured charts that can be set up in the new Home page. 
          Languages and File Types Analytics
        • A number of additional features and improvements are on the way in our analytics domain.
        • And most importantly, we will extend these new features also to our translation agency customers (Team Start, Team Ultimate editions) – we hope by the end of Q1/2016.

Memsource 6.0: PDF Translation, CMS Connectors, Faster Web Editor

A faster Web Editor, connectors to Dropbox, Google Drive and FTP, and seamless PDF translations via TransPDF are the most notable improvements in this autumn release.

All of the features are already live, along with a number of bug fixes. Since we switched to continuous deployment on June 22, there is no more maintenance required, and no more system downtime.

Connectors to Dropbox, Google Drive and FTP

Users can now sync Memsource accounts with online repositories, such as Dropbox, Google Drive, and FTP folders. The integration allows for both manual and automatic file import.

Features:

  • Ability to create translation jobs from files on Dropbox, Google Drive, or an FTP folder
  • Automatically checks the folders for new files on a regular basis and retrieves them for translation
  • After a file is translated, Memsource uploads it back to the online folder with a modified name
  • Google Drive and DropBox connectors are available for all Team and Business editions; FTP is available for Ultimate, Biz Team, and Biz Ultimate editions

The connector to online repositories can eliminate manual file handling between content and translation management systems. If you can set up your CMS to upload files for translation into an online repository, and grab translated files from it, it becomes much easier to handle large amounts of material or constantly updated content.

To set this up, connect your FTP, Dropbox or Google Drive to Memsource under Setup – Integrations – Connectors.

Faster Web Editor

Since the introduction of the Web Editor, we have been progressively making it more fluent and user-friendly. In this release, there has been a considerable improvement in speed.

After optimizing the spellchecker and introducing other improvements, Memsource Web Editor now operates faster and is smoother when typing and scrolling.

While Memsource Editor may still be the faster option in some scenarios, the Web Editor experience has improved dramatically, including on projects with large files. Please post your feedback in the comments.

Translate PDF Files with TransPDF

You can now import a PDF, translate it into Memsource Editor or Web Editor, and rebuild it in the target language without desktop publishing (DTP) work through another program.

PDF > editable XLIFF > PDF in a new language

This is possible due to the integration of Iceni TransPDF, a tool that converts PDF files to XLIFF formats and back. While a DTP quality check is still required, this integration brings Memsource users one step closer the seamless translation of PDFs.

With the TransPDF connector, users can:

  • Import and process PDF files normally
  • Download translations as PDFs from Memsource Cloud, or as RTF from your Iceni account to correct layouts
  • Post-edit PDFs in Iceni Infix PDF Editor

Setup:

To use this function you will need your own account with TransPDF topped up with credit. Iceni charges between €0.12 and 0.41 per final page (you can still import as many as you like), and the first 50 pages are free. A preview for translators working on the file is available for free directly through the Memsource editors.

PS: You can still translate PDF in Memsource without buying TransPDF credit, and after your translation is finished you will get text files that can be used to rebuild the PDF manually.

Job Board Redesign

The Job Board has a new look which more clearly indicates available offers and responses to them.

Buyers:

  • You can now add a sample paragraph of text for translation when publishing a new job posting;
  • Setting a delivery deadline is now mandatory. When the deadline is reached, the job post is automatically closed;
  • You can filter projects published on the job board in the Projects tab;
  • You can now see the number of organisations notified about the new job posting, and the number of responses in a tooltip.

Vendors:

  • Open job postings are now always displayed at the top;
  • Job postings you have responded to will be grayed out;
  • Project offers now show the buyer organisation name;
  • When a project published on the Job Board is deleted from Memsource Cloud, it is marked as Closed on the job board.

Globalese MT Integration

You can now add custom Globalese machine translation engines to your projects. While working in the Editors, translators will receive suggestions from a MT engine trained in a specific subject matter area. Engines can be created from a translation memory corpus of 100,000 segments and more.

Globalese is a Moses-based statistical machine translation system that is available as SaaS or a private installation. It is developed by MorphoLogic Localisation, an LSP in Hungary.

Setup:

Add the engine under Setup -> Integrations -> Machine Translation Engines. You will need an API key and an engine ID.

Tip: Check “Include tags” to allow the engine to automatically add tags from source to translations.

Support for QuarkXPress file formats TAG and XTG

Memsource has started supporting QuarkXPress file formats.

QuarkXPress is a tool for creating and editing layouts in a WYSIWYG environment. Out of all the possible file formats the tool can generate, the TAG and XTG files are currently supported (since these are the formats containing translatable text).

The import settings for Quark Tag files allow for the removal of kerning and tracking tags.

Working with Salesforce files

Our new “File” API calls (see the API Improvement section bellow) allows uploading files to Memsource via URL. That allows users to import files for translation from a link with content hosted for example on salesforce.com. This change will be useful primarily for LSPs that use Salesforce as a business management system in conjunction with Memsource as their translation management system and their API integration system.

Another possible function is the ability to import Salesforce reports to Memsource. This would be useful when preparing personalized mass email campaigns. Hundreds or thousands of names can be translated into another alphabet (Latin into hieroglyphic, Cyrillic, or Arabic) quickly with the help of translation memory.

Please note, this feature is only available for users with their own API Memsource Integration.

Option to Edit TMs and TBs in Existing Project Templates

It is now possible to edit existing project templates to add or remove translation memories and term bases. This replaces the need to create a new project template every time such a change is needed.

Setup:

  • Navigate to Setup -> Project Templates;
  • Open the template that needs change;
  • Scroll down to the bottom of the page to access this option.

Download CSV files with Character Information

It is now possible to download the Analysis in an additional format, a CSV file with character information.

API Improvements

There are several important developments with Memsource API:

  • Our new “File” APIs allow to upload files using various techniques. After the file is uploaded, a handle (uid) is returned and it can be used in other APIs accepting files of type exfile (such as create job).
    User will be now able to:
    • Upload File in Request Body
    • Upload File in Multipart Form Data
    • Upload File from URL
    • Delete File
    • Download File
  • Human translation engine supported by APIs.
    It is now possible to run translations via Gengo using APIs, and completely automate delivery. The call is documented in our API manual.
  • Webhook for a new job in project.
    When a new job is created, a URL with the corresponding parameters can be sent via webhooks.
  • There is a new API to copy source to target.
  • The Response for the Get User or List Users API calls will now contain the following data:
    • Creation date
    • Last Login Date

Convert to Memsource Tags for RESX Files

The option to “convert to Memsource tags” has been added for RESX files. This option is is useful if you want to treat some strings as non-translatable.

Memsource 6.2: Translate Google Docs + Run Projects without a Manager

Memsource 6.2 is now live, following the major release 6.0 two weeks ago.  This week’s update features the ability to translate Google Documents, to run projects without a human project manager, and to use Memsource translation memory in other CAT tools.

Support for Google Documents

Adding a Google Doc named “Academic Edition Manual” for translation.

Memsource is able to directly read Google Documents from Google Drive, and create translation jobs from them.

(Please note, the connector to Google Drive is available for the Team and Business editions.)

Shared documents: In order to add a document that has been shared to your Google drive by a customer for example, you need to first add it to your drive.

After a Google document is translated in Memsource Cloud, it will be converted back to Google document format.

Delivering translations:

  • Manual: to export the translated document back to Google Drive, press “Export to online repository” under the Download menu.
  • Automatic: automatically added jobs will be uploaded to Google Drive automatically to the same location from which the original was taken.

Automated Import and Export for Google Drive, Dropbox and FTP

It is now possible to upload files for translation from online repositories automatically. Memsource will check the designated online folders, send all newly detected files for translation to an automatically created project, and after the translations are finished, send the translated files back to the location from which they were retrieved.

This feature is useful for creating quick integrations with content management systems that can export to a shared folder, translating regular updates to websites. Project managers can attach a pool of linguists or vendors to a project template, and completely automate their process.

Interoperability with other CAT tools: New format of tags in TMX export

This change allows project managers to download translation memory from Memsource and use it in any other CAT tool that supports TMX, including SDL Trados and Kilgray memoQ.

Memsource tags in the TMX file exported from translation memory in Memsource, or from a job will be converted to standard TMX format tags <bpt>, <ept> and <ph>. However the exchange still not have a 100% fidelity because every CAT tool might have a different way how to handle tags when parsing original document for translation.

Linguists may download a TMX from the translation job they have done in Memsource (through Download – TMX) in the project page (unless this option has been disabled by project manager).

We recommend translation buyers and clients to encourage their linguists to work in Memsource editors, and stay connected to updates in translation memory and terminology in real time. At the same time, it is now possible to support linguists that strongly prefer their own tool, and are reluctant to switch to the buyer’s technology.

Project Status Automation: Run Workflows without a Human Manager

Project managers can now completely automate processes without any involvement on their part. This will help deliver projects outside business hours of the project manager.

Project Status automation is a complementary feature that works together with the Automation Widget and Automated Project Creation. Previously, projects created via the widget could send jobs to linguists, and the workflow stopped after the translators and reviewers finished their work. Now it is possible to add a set of rules to send the completed files to the client.

Other Automation Updates

  • New Macro for Email Templates
    {job.wordCount} will display wordcount that users can see when hovering mouse over Confirmed % of a job or in the analysis
  • Storage of API Async Requests
    API Async Requests created in Asynchronous API and Translation Memory Asynchronous API will be stored for 14 days. After that period they will be deleted and the information will no longer be available.

 

New webhook and updates to response structure

Memsource 6.10 brings new webhook trigger as well as an update to the JSON datastructure.

Webhook, an arbitrary URL which can handle HTTP POST requests, can now receive 3 event notifications from Memsource Cloud:

  • Job Created
  • Job Assigned
  • Job Status Changed

The JSON data structure has also been updated in order to pride additional information about the event.
